Deniliquin Rams coach Todd Gallagher (right) and his brother-in-law Adrian Pappin couldn’t help but smile while walking off the Echuca United oval on Saturday.
Their previously winless side had just caused a major upset by knocking off the Eagles by 16 points in round 10 of the Murray Football League.
The Rams were given little hope of beating the home side, which had a 4-4 win loss record heading into the contest.
Pappin and Gallagher played key roles, kicking nine goals between them and leading what is believed to be one of the youngest senior sides in the club’s history to a stirring win.
The Deni side had an average age of just 20 and included three of the club’s leading under 17 players — Will Shaw, Darcy Morris and John Bowie — who all made strong contributions to the win.
The Rams faithful packed the changerooms after the game to hear the club song for the first time in 2018, and first-year coach Gallagher was almost lost for words before his post game address.
‘‘I’m not used to this (addressing a winning side),’’ Gallagher said with a wry smile which was followed by a huge cheer from the Rams players and supporters.
