Modern blend

Before we commit millions to the proposed, controversial SAM; some food for thought ...

Have you ever marvelled at the remarkable feat of engineering and architecture of Costa Hall, Deakin University’s 1500-seat auditorium which originally housed Geelong’s old wool stores?

Or on a visit to Hobart, visited the Henry Jones Art Hotel where architects have revived the historic site of the former jam factory, where art and design are to the forefront with space for exhibitions of Tasmanian art.

Here in the Goulburn Valley, staring us in the face is the site of world renowned Ardmona Cannery at Mooroopna.

Before artists start coming up with designs for the new SAM on a narrow strip of land near Victoria Park Lake, let’s consider a cultural centre at this spacious, accessible site, where architects would be able to blend the historic with the modern.

We have let the majority of our historical buildings be demolished — time to look at changing the pattern.

Gloria delighted

Congratulations to GV Libraries and Greater Shepparton City Council for bringing to us Gloria’s Handbag on May 14. Helen Moulder was superb in the role of Gloria. Her interactions with the audience, acting, singing and magic tricks entertained and delighted.
